Veteran Nollywood Actor and Scholar, Chief Dr. Kola Oyewo, Dies at 80


Veteran Nigerian actor, dramatist, filmmaker, and scholar, Chief Dr. Kola Oyewo, has passed away at the age of 80.

His death was announced on Friday night by fellow actor Kunle Afod, who paid tribute to the late thespian on social media, describing him as a legend whose contributions to the Nigerian theatre and film industry will never be forgotten.

Born on March 27, 1946, in Oba-Ile, Dr. Oyewo began his acting career in 1964 with the Oyin Adejobi Theatre Group. Over a career spanning more than six decades, he became one of the most respected figures in Yoruba theatre and Nigerian cinema, earning acclaim for his role as Odewale in The Gods Are Not to Blame.

Beyond acting, Dr. Oyewo was a distinguished academic who taught at Obafemi Awolowo University, Redeemer's University, and Elizade University, mentoring generations of actors, playwrights, and scholars.

The family is yet to announce burial arrangements.
