The Association of Local Governments of Nigeria (ALGON), Osun State chapter, has announced the immediate suspension of the activities of all transport unions in public motor parks across the state, citing worsening insecurity and violent clashes linked to the leadership crisis within the National Union of Road Transport Workers (NURTW).
The decision was announced on Monday during a press conference addressed by the Vice Chairman of the association, Hon. Lanre Balogun, who said the measure was aimed at restoring order and protecting lives and property.
ALGON alleged that motor parks and garages across Osun State had become hotspots for violence and criminal activities, posing serious threats to commuters, transport operators and residents.
The association also accused Governor Ademola Adeleke of failing to take decisive action to address the security situation, alleging that political considerations had been placed above public safety.
According to ALGON, recent violent incidents in Osogbo, allegedly linked to the factional chairman of the NURTW, Nurudeen Alowonle, resulted in the killing of a toddler and the shooting of an elderly man who is currently receiving treatment. The association said the incidents triggered reprisal attacks and repeated security operations in motor parks in search of suspected criminals.
It further stated that another protest erupted in motor parks and garages across the state on Monday, creating tension before police officers intervened to restore calm.
Citing the provisions of the 1999 Constitution, ALGON maintained that the administration and management of public motor parks fall under the constitutional responsibilities of local government councils. It said the councils, through their elected chairmen, have the authority to regulate motor parks, maintain order and establish appropriate management structures.
Based on this, the association announced the immediate suspension of the operations of all transport unions, including motorcycle and tricycle unions, in public motor parks across the state's 30 local government areas and the Ife East Area Office (Modakeke).
ALGON also called on the Nigeria Police Force and other security agencies to take over all public motor parks and garages across the state to ensure the protection of lives and property.
The association further urged the police to intensify efforts to arrest Nurudeen Alowonle and other persons allegedly connected with the recent killings, saying those responsible should be brought to justice to restore lasting peace.
It added that local government chairmen would continue consultations with traditional rulers, religious leaders and other stakeholders before announcing further measures.
The association expressed optimism that the steps would restore order in motor parks and improve security across Osun State.
