The African Democratic Congress (ADC) presidential candidate, Atiku Abubakar, has dismissed allegations by former President Olusegun Obasanjo that he offered a bribe to the late former Speaker of the House of Representatives, Ghali Umar Na’Abba, during an alleged impeachment plot.
In a statement issued on Friday by his media aide, Phrank Shaibu, Atiku described the accusation as a politically driven attempt to tarnish his reputation as preparations for the 2027 presidential election gather pace.
The former Vice President argued that Obasanjo should openly identify the candidate he intends to support in the next election instead of reviving allegations that cannot be verified since Na’Abba is no longer alive to respond.
Atiku questioned why the former President failed to raise the issue publicly while the late Speaker was still alive, saying Nigerians had been denied the opportunity to hear Na’Abba’s side of the story.
He further maintained that the bribery allegation was never backed by any court ruling or official investigation, asking why no legal action was taken at the time if credible evidence truly existed.
According to Atiku, the renewed accusation is linked to the long-standing political differences between him and Obasanjo, particularly his opposition to the controversial third-term agenda during their time in office. He insisted that his stance was guided by his commitment to constitutional democracy, adding that the legal battles that followed became significant milestones in Nigeria's democratic journey.
Despite the renewed controversy, Atiku said he remains focused on addressing the country's pressing challenges, including insecurity, economic hardship, unemployment and rising hunger. He stressed that his priority is to provide Nigerians with practical solutions and a credible alternative to the current administration rather than engaging in political disputes from the past.
