The Youth Advancement Initiative (YAI), Osun State Chapter, expresses its strongest condemnation of the violent attack allegedly carried out by suspected political thugs against the Special Assistant to the Governor on Youth in Parliament and Member representing Osun Central in the Youth Parliament, Hon. Adekunle Akinrinade, on Thursday evening in Osogbo.
The reported attack, which occurred at about 6:30 p.m. near the MRS Filling Station, Ogooluwa, is not only an assault on the person of Hon. Akinrinade but also an attack on democratic values, youth participation in governance, and the fundamental right of every citizen to live and engage in public service without fear of intimidation or violence.
As a youth-focused organization committed to promoting peace, leadership, justice, and democratic development, we find this incident deeply disturbing and unacceptable. Violence has no place in our political process, and no individual should be subjected to brutality because of political affiliation or public service.
We are, however, grateful to the concerned members of the public whose timely intervention prevented what could have resulted in a far more tragic outcome. We also thank God that Hon. Akinrinade is currently receiving medical attention and is reportedly responding positively to treatment. We wish him a speedy and complete recovery.
The Youth Advancement Initiative calls on the relevant security agencies, particularly the Nigeria Police Force and other law enforcement authorities, to immediately conduct a thorough, impartial, and transparent investigation into this unfortunate incident. Those responsible, regardless of their political status or influence, must be identified, arrested, prosecuted, and made to face the full weight of the law.
Furthermore, we urge the government and security agencies to strengthen protective measures for public office holders, especially young leaders who continue to contribute meaningfully to governance and democratic development in Osun State.
We equally appeal to political actors, supporters, and all stakeholders to reject violence, intimidation, and hate. Political differences should be resolved through dialogue, democratic engagement, and respect for the rule of law rather than through acts of aggression.
The Youth Advancement Initiative remains committed to advocating for a peaceful, secure, and democratic Osun State where every young person can participate in governance without fear of victimization.
We stand in solidarity with Hon. Adekunle Akinrinade, his family, colleagues, and the entire youth community during this difficult time. An attack on one young leader is an attack on the collective aspirations of young people striving to build a better society.
