The Osun State Chapter of the Accord has received credible intelligence suggesting an alleged plot by desperate opposition elements to compromise the integrity of the August 15 governorship election through the theft and concealment of sensitive election materials meant for designated polling units across the state.
According to the intelligence available to the party, the sinister plan is allegedly designed to prevent the timely deployment of sensitive election materials to targeted polling units, thereby creating an excuse to disenfranchise thousands of eligible voters and undermine the credibility of the electoral process.
The Accord wishes to place the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) on notice that the people of Osun State are expecting the Commission to conduct a free, fair and transparent election. Any negligence or complicity that allows sensitive election materials to be diverted, withheld or outrightly stolen will be viewed as a grave betrayal of the constitutional responsibility entrusted to the electoral body.
We therefore call on INEC to immediately strengthen the security, movement, storage and distribution of all sensitive election materials. Every stage of the logistics chain must be subjected to the highest level of accountability to ensure that no individual or group is able to tamper with materials meant for any polling unit.
The party also calls on all security agencies, particularly the Nigeria Police Force, the Department of State Services (DSS), the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) and other relevant agencies, to treat this intelligence with the seriousness it deserves. Preventive action in this wise, is far more desirable than responding after irreparable damage has been done to the electoral process.
The Accord Party makes it abundantly clear that any attempt by anyone, irrespective of status or political affiliation, to steal, divert or deliberately hide election materials with the intention of disenfranchising voters or rigging the election will be firmly resisted through every lawful and democratic means available. The sovereign will of the people of Osun State cannot and must not be subverted through electoral sabotage.
We urge the people of Osun State to remain vigilant, peaceful and law-abiding while promptly reporting any suspicious movement or handling of election materials to the appropriate authorities.
The August 15 governorship election is a defining moment for our democracy. It must not be tainted by desperate politicians who have concluded that they cannot secure victory through the ballots and therefore seek to manipulate the process through criminal means.
Signed:
Pastor Victor Babalola Akande
Osun State Accord Chairman
