The ancient city of Osogbo, the capital of Osun State, came alive on Friday as thousands of worshippers, tourists, cultural enthusiasts, and traditional devotees from across Nigeria and around the world gathered for the grand celebration of the 2026 Osun-Osogbo Festival, one of Africa's most celebrated cultural and spiritual festivals.
The annual festival transformed the historic city into a vibrant spectacle of culture, tradition, and spirituality. Worshippers adorned themselves in colourful traditional attires, while many women showcased beautifully styled and intricately braided hairstyles, adding glamour and elegance to the occasion and creating a breathtaking atmosphere throughout the procession.
One of the festival's most anticipated moments was the appearance of the Arugba Alimat Osunbunmi, the sacred calabash bearer, who commenced the spiritual procession from the Ataoja's Palace after receiving royal blessings from the Ataoja of Osogboland, His Imperial Majesty, Oba Jimoh Oyetunji Olanipekun Larooye II. Carrying the sacred calabash on her head, the Arugba led a massive procession of worshippers, traditional chiefs, and cultural groups through the streets of Osogbo to the revered Osun Sacred Grove.
The procession was accompanied by traditional drummers, praise singers, dancers, and devotees who sang, danced, and offered prayers throughout the journey, reflecting the rich cultural heritage and deep spiritual significance of the festival.
At the Osun-Osogbo Sacred Grove, the Ataoja of Osogboland joined the worshippers for the concluding rites of the celebration. Special prayers were offered for peace, prosperity, unity, and continued development of Osogboland, Osun State, and Nigeria as a whole. Traditional chiefs, devotees, community leaders, and various cultural groups also offered heartfelt prayers for the long life, good health, and successful reign of His Imperial Majesty, Oba Jimoh Oyetunji Olanipekun Larooye II.
The 2026 Osun-Osogbo Festival once again reaffirmed its status as a global cultural and spiritual event, attracting visitors from different parts of the world while preserving the centuries-old traditions and customs that have earned the festival international recognition.
The colourful celebration highlighted the enduring importance of Yoruba heritage, unity, and cultural identity, leaving participants with lasting memories of another successful edition of the iconic festival.
