A middle-aged man, popularly known as Odomma, has been found dead after allegedly taking his own life at Amakpu Okuku community in Owerri West Local Government Area of Imo State.
The man, said to be in his 50s and a father of four, was discovered hanging in an uncompleted building near his residence on Friday morning, according to The Punch.
According to the report, community members said the deceased, who survived by selling water in jerry cans and buckets, had been battling severe financial hardship and could no longer provide for his wife and children.
It was learnt that Odomma had openly lamented his situation for months and once threatened to end his life.
“He said if the situation continued, he would take his life to end the misery. We advised him to take the matter to the village head for settlement. Sadly, he chose this path,” a resident identified as Ikenna told The PUNCH.
Another resident said the man had become visibly depressed, especially after complaining that his wife and children had allegedly stopped giving him food because he could not fend for the household.
Eyewitnesses described a chaotic scene as tens of villagers rushed to the uncompleted building to see the body, with many taking videos on their mobile phones.
The deceased, who was widely patronised for water sales priced from ₦100 upwards, was said to be hardworking but deeply frustrated in recent times.
When contacted, the spokesperson for the Imo State Police Command, Henry Okoye, promised to confirm the incident and get back, but had not done so at the time of filing the report.
