The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has announced that more than 505,906 Nigerians have completed their online pre-registration for the Continuous Voter Registration (CVR) exercise within just five days of its launch.
This announcement was made on Friday, August 22, 2025, during the official flag-off of nationwide sensitisation activities for the CVR in Abuja. The Chairman of the Commission, Professor Mahmood Yakubu, was represented at the event by National Commissioner, Mrs. May Agbamuche-Mbu.
Professor Yakubu described the early turnout as a clear reflection of Nigerians' strong commitment to participating in the democratic process.
“As of midnight on Thursday, August 22, 2025, over 505,906 citizens had pre-registered since the portal opened five days ago. This shows that Nigerians are eager to be part of the democratic process and trust the Commission’s efforts to strengthen our electoral system,” he stated.
The online pre-registration phase began on Monday, August 18, 2025, and will transition into its physical phase on Monday, August 25, 2025. From that date, citizens who completed the online process—as well as first-time registrants—can visit INEC local government and state offices nationwide to capture their biometrics and finalize their registration.
As part of its efforts to mobilize citizens, INEC has commenced a national sensitisation campaign. The initiative underscores the importance of voter registration as a critical step toward meaningful electoral participation.
In Abuja, the campaign featured a vibrant roadshow organized by the Voter Education and Publicity Department. The procession moved from INEC Headquarters in Maitama through Banex Plaza in Wuse, culminating at the bustling Wuse Market, distributing flyers and engaging directly with citizens.
Similar sensitisation efforts will take place across all states of the federation.
Professor Yakubu also called on eligible citizens—particularly first-time voters, young Nigerians who have just turned 18, and those needing to update or transfer their voter information—to participate in the registration exercise.
“Your Permanent Voter Card (PVC) is your voice. We urge all stakeholders—political parties, civil society organizations, the media, and citizens—to work with the Commission to increase awareness and participation,” he emphasized.
The CVR will run at 811 registration centers nationwide, including all 774 Local Government Area offices and State INEC offices, from 9:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m., Mondays to Fridays.
Through the Commission’s portal—www.cvr.inecnigeria.org—citizens can pre-register, check their PVC status, locate registration centers, transfer their registration, request a replacement of lost or damaged PVCs, and correct personal information.
INEC assured the public that special accommodations are in place to ensure accessibility for persons with disabilities and other vulnerable groups.
Professor Yakubu concluded by reiterating that voter registration is a shared responsibility, urging all Nigerians to play their part in building a stronger democratic future.
