According to an interview on Channels Television, Abayomi Arabambi, National Publicity Secretary of the Labour Party (LP), has strongly dismissed recent talks about political coalitions involving opposition leaders and former members of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).
Arabambi, visibly displeased, criticized politicians who once backed the APC but have now turned against President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s administration. He argued that many of them were central to the challenges Nigeria currently faces. “These are the very people we opposed during the 2022–2023 elections. They stood firmly with APC under Buhari, and when their expectations for ministerial appointments or positions were not met, they suddenly abandoned the party,” he said.
He reserved sharper words for reports linking Labour Party’s presidential candidate in the last election, Peter Obi, to discussions with former Vice President Atiku Abubakar and ex-President Olusegun Obasanjo. Arabambi recalled the controversy surrounding the $16 billion power project under Obasanjo’s government, accusing them of presiding over failures that worsened Nigeria’s development. "And Obi has the audacity to go and join hands with Atiku and Obasanjo that sponsored darkness into Nigeria with $16 billion, and nobody questioned it,” he remarked.
Arabambi further criticized those within the Labour Party who appear to welcome such alliances, insisting that the party’s values must not be compromised for political convenience. “Where is the ideology in joining forces with individuals who should be held accountable? Labour Party will never be part of any unholy coalition with people who ought to be facing trial,” he declared.
His comments underscore growing divisions within the opposition camp as parties weigh strategies ahead of the 2027 elections. For Arabambi, the Labour Party’s credibility lies in maintaining a distinct ideological path rather than embracing questionable political marriages.
