More than five decades ago, Amar Bharati made a vow that would permanently change his life.
Once an ordinary bank employee in New Delhi, Bharati had a wife and three children. But in 1970, he walked away from his job and family and devoted his life to Lord Shiva.
Three years later, in 1973, he made an extraordinary commitment: he raised his right arm toward the sky—and vowed never to lower it again.
His message was one of peace.
“I do not ask for much. Why are we fighting our sons among ourselves? Why is there so much hatred and enmity between us? I just want all Indians and the whole world to live in peace with each other.”
The first years were reportedly excruciating. Constantly holding his arm aloft brought severe pain and made sleep difficult. But Bharati refused to break his vow.
Over time, the pain reportedly subsided as his arm lost sensation. The muscles gradually wasted away, and the joints became permanently stiff. His hand remained locked in the same raised position.
Even his fingernails, left uncut since 1973, grew into long, curved shapes.
Today, Bharati is in his seventies and remains a familiar figure at major Hindu gatherings, including the Kumbh Mela. His unusual vow has made him a symbol of extreme religious devotion and a personal appeal for peace.
After more than 50 years, his arm remains raised.
And according to Bharati, it will stay that way until his final breath.
