A New Year outing turned tragic in Osun State after a teenager lost his life at a hotel swimming pool in Owode-Ede, plunging the community into grief and raising serious safety concerns.
The incident occurred on January 1 at a popular hotel along the Osogbo–Gbongan Road. The teenager, whose name has not yet been officially disclosed, was reportedly found unresponsive inside the swimming pool during New Year celebrations.
According to eyewitnesses, the boy had gone out with friends to mark the New Year when the tragedy occurred. Panic erupted moments later after his body was discovered in the pool.
Outrage as Family Demands Answers
The incident sparked anger among the victim’s friends and relatives. On Friday, they returned to the hotel demanding clarity over the circumstances surrounding the death.
Protesters accused the hotel management of negligence, citing the alleged absence of trained lifeguards, poor supervision, and a lack of emergency response measures at the pool. Tensions ran high before security personnel stepped in to prevent the situation from escalating.
Police Confirm Incident, Launch Investigation
The Osun State Police Command confirmed the incident. Deputy Police Public Relations Officer, Emmanuel Giwa-Alade, clarified that the gathering at the hotel was not a mob action but an attempt by the family to seek explanations.
He stated that police officers, alongside personnel from the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC), restored calm at the scene. Authorities have since opened an investigation and promised to make their findings public.

Residents of Owode-Ede say the incident has exposed gaps in safety standards at hotels and recreational centers. Many are calling for stricter enforcement of regulations, including mandatory lifeguards and improved safety protocols, especially during festive periods.
