South African heavyweights Kaizer Chiefs have stepped up efforts to secure the services of Super Eagles' goalkeeper Stanley Nwabali following an injury setback to their first-choice shot-stopper, Brandon Petersen.
According to a report by The Punch on Tuesday, March 3, 2026, Petersen recently underwent appendix surgery and, although he is expected to leave hospital shortly, his timeline for returning to competitive action remains uncertain.
Recovery from such a procedure typically ranges between three and six weeks, leaving the Soweto-based side short of stability in goal at a critical stage of the campaign.
The impact of Petersen’s absence was immediate.
Chiefs suffered a 3-0 defeat to rivals Orlando Pirates in the Soweto derby, with Bruce Bvuma stepping in between the posts.
The result further dented their Betway Premiership title aspirations, as they now trail the leaders by 11 points.
In response, the club have reportedly tabled an offer for Nwabali, who is currently unattached after parting ways with Chippa United earlier this year.
The 29-year-old’s free-agent status makes him an appealing and immediate solution as Chiefs seek experienced cover.
Nwabali is no stranger to South African football, having made 66 appearances in the Betway Premiership.
He also attracted interest from Chiefs during the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations in Morocco, where his assured displays helped Nigeria secure a third-place finish.
