The crisis rocking the Osun State chapter of the Social Democratic Party (SDP) over who is the authentic governorship candidate of the party may have finally come to an end.
This followed the decision of the party's governorship candidate during the just concluded Osun State governorship election, Mr. Salawu-Adeniyi Mustapha, to withdraw his appeal pending before the Supreme Court.
Mr. Mustapha, who was enmeshed in a legal battle over the authentic ticket of the SDP following the internal leadership crisis within the party, said he decided to let go of the case for the sake of peace and stability of Osun State.
In a personal statement made available to newsmen on Wednesday, the SDP flag bearer of the Gabam faction, explained that his decision was not taken out of weakness but out of patriotism and love for Osun State.
He said, "Following deep consultation with my family, political associates, and stakeholders across Osun State, I have decided to withdraw my appeal at the Supreme Court on the matter of the authentic candidacy of our great party, the SDP.
"My decision is hinged on the need to give peace a chance and to allow the winner of the August 15th governorship election, His Excellency, Senator Ademola Adeleke, to concentrate and deliver on his second term mandate without unnecessary distraction. The progress of Osun is greater than any individual ambition."
Mustapha congratulated Governor Adeleke on his victory at the poll and pledged his support for his administration, urging all SDP members and his supporters to join hands with the government to move the state forward.
*Clarification on Supreme Court Proceedings*
In the meantime, Chucks Uguru & co, the counsel to the Osun State SDP governorship candidate, Mr Salawu-Adeniyi Mustapha, has clarified what transpired during today’s Supreme Court proceedings.
According to him, the Supreme Court made no pronouncement on the leadership of the SDP, and there was no ruling in favour of any alleged “imposters” of the party’s leadership.
He further stressed that Alh. Shehu Musa Gabam remains the authentic National Chairman of the SDP.
