A 17-year-old boy, Riccardo B. from Rome, tragically lost his life after a sand tunnel he was digging collapsed on a beach in Montalto di Castro, located in northwest Italy.
Riccardo, who was on vacation with his family, had been digging a tunnel in the sand, intending to crawl through it. As he reached the center of the structure, it suddenly gave way, burying him beneath the sand. According to witnesses, the collapse happened in an instant, leaving no visible trace of the tunnel.
Lifeguards, beach visitors, and Riccardo’s father rushed to dig him out, but despite their efforts and the arrival of emergency services, the teenager had already suffocated.
Local officials expressed deep sorrow over the incident. The mayor of Montalto di Castro extended heartfelt condolences to the boy’s family and announced the suspension of all public events as the town grieves the loss.
Authorities are now urging beachgoers to exercise caution when digging in sand, warning of the dangers such activities can pose.
