Former President Olusegun Obasanjo has alleged that former Vice President Atiku Abubakar financially supported an attempt to impeach him during his first tenure in office by providing N5 million to initiate the process.
Obasanjo made the claim while responding to remarks by former Ogun State Governor Olusegun Osoba concerning the political developments that preceded the 2003 general elections.
According to Obasanjo, the late Speaker of the House of Representatives, Ghali Na'Abba, began impeachment proceedings after meeting with Atiku at the Presidential Villa.
He alleged that, during his absence from the office on a Friday, Atiku invited Na'Abba and persuaded him that Obasanjo should serve only one term as president.
Obasanjo further claimed that Atiku handed Na'Abba N5 million to kick-start the impeachment effort. He said the alleged meeting and financial transaction were documented and later reported to him by his Chief of Staff, whom he described as a professional intelligence officer.
Despite the alleged plot, Obasanjo said he remained unconcerned because he believed there were no constitutional grounds to justify his removal from office.
