The attention of the Social Democratic Party, SDP, Osun State Chapter has been drawn to a press statement issued by the African Action Congress, AAC, Osun State Chapter on 21st July 2026, titled _"Osun Descends Into Anarchy"_.
While we share the concern for peace and security in our dear state, we find the tone, language, and conclusions of the AAC statement irresponsible, alarmist, and capable of heating up the polity at a time when all political actors should be preaching peace.
*Our Position:*
1. *On Security:*
We acknowledge the unfortunate incident at Old Garage, Osogbo on Monday. Violence against traders and citizens is condemnable in all forms, regardless of who the perpetrators are. However, to label the entire state as a "theatre of anarchy" is an exaggeration that does a disservice to the millions of law-abiding Osun people going about their daily business in peace. Security challenges exist, but Osun is not at war.
2. *On the Nigeria Police:*
The SDP believes in due process. If there is verifiable evidence of police misconduct or partisanship as alleged, the proper channel is the Police Service Commission and the Inspector General of Police, not trial by press statement. We call on the IGP to investigate all allegations impartially and sanction any officer found wanting. But we will not join in rubbishing an entire institution that our democracy depends on.
3. *On the Election:*
The August 15th Governorship election must hold as scheduled. The SDP rejects any plot, from any quarters, to truncate our democracy or impose an unelected administration on Osun. However, we also reject attempts to pre-emptively declare the state "ungovernable" as a strategy to delegitimize the process. The people of Osun are mature and will defend their mandate with their votes.
4. *On Responsible Politics:*
As we approach the polls, we urge all parties, including AAC, to focus on issues that matter to Osun people: *Education, Jobs, and Infrastructure*. The politics of fear, incitement, and blanket accusations will not develop Osun. The SDP will not be part of any narrative that seeks to burn down the house in order to catch a rat.
*Our Call:*
We call on the IGP, the DSS, and all security agencies to remain neutral and provide adequate security for all parties and citizens before, during, and after the election.
We call on INEC to ensure a free, fair, and credible election on August 15th.
We call on all Osun people to remain calm, law-abiding, and vigilant. Do not be provoked. Your vote is your power.
Osun will not burn. Osun will vote. Osun will decide.
*Signed:*
