Kinat, who hails from Osun State and is in her early 30s and now a content creator, has shared her touching and painful experience working as a maid in Cairo, Egypt.
In her words:
"I travelled to Egypt, Cairo in 2016 to work as a maid. I worked for seven and a half years and wasted another year, which made it nine years. In the first seven and a half years, I had an accident — I fell from a nine-storey building, which made me lose everything I worked for. I wasted another one and a half years undergoing surgeries on my legs.
The experience I had in Cairo was crazy. When we leave Nigeria to an Arab country, we become slaves. It was not that I wished to go, I came from a very poor background. They treat us like slaves, like we don't have family, like we came from nowhere.
When I got to Cairo, they seized our passports till we paid them finish. My salary was 100k monthly and they would give us 4k just in case we wanted to buy sanitary pads. Sometimes we slept on their dog's bed, sometimes on the floor. I was unable to speak to any of my family until I finished paying them, which was seven months after I got there. I was able to talk to my family and then my mom was very sick, but I didn't know because I didn't have access to them.
Well, I can't really say I made a mistake for going to Cairo then, but the position I and my family were in pushed me to go. I only went there to hustle. I can't say anyone that wants to go to Cairo to hustle shouldn't go, because a lot of people are suffering and will take that opportunity if given. If they go, may they be favored. I went there and came back with nothing, but I thank God for life."
Despite everything she went through, we are happy that Kinat is now doing very well for herself. She has picked up the pieces of her life and is thriving as a content creator. Her strength and resilience are truly inspiring.
